Obituary

Charles F. Sampsel, 83, of Bristol, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully in his home, on July 18, 2026.

“Poppop Chuck”, to those who knew him best, is survived by his wife, Dolores Ciotti Sampsel, and her children, David Kilgallon (Colleen) and Andrea Morris. He was a devoted grandfather to David, Christopher, Nicholas, and Patrick Kilgallon, and Leighann, James, and Katie Morris. Although he was a “step” figure, he was never considered to be anything other than a true father and grandfather.

Charles was born on May 17, 1943 to Dr. Charles F. Sampsel and Marion Harrison Sampsel. A physician in the Army, Charles’ father unfortunately lost his life in Okinawa when Charles was only 18 months old. He was raised by his mother Marion, and Aunt Mabel at their home on Radcliffe Street in Bristol, PA.

A graduate of Bristol High School (1961), Charles continued his education at Gettysburg College before earning his law degree from Duke University (1968). He practiced as a lawyer at Begley, Carlin & Mandio Law Firm until his retirement.

Charlie was an easy man to please. He loved fishing and was happiest on his boat, whether it was on the Delaware River or on the water in Florida, where he had a residence for many years. He was an avid fan of the Phillies, the Eagles, and Duke basketball, and found joy in anything to do with history, black licorice, and root beer water ice. Oh, and the hard candies that I’m sure his family will be finding around the house for years to come. He and his wife Dolores spent the years traveling to everywhere you could imagine, often joined by friends and family. Hawaii, Egypt, Europe, and a cross country road trip were some of his favorites.

Charles will be remembered for his sharp mind, witty comments, and unwavering patience (especially for his wife). He was the best husband, father, grandfather, and friend that you could imagine. He will be deeply missed by his wife, children, grandchildren, and all of the friends he has made along the way, especially by his best friends Henry (Barbara) Perotti and Henry “Jiggs” Nagel.

Family and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Mass at St. Mark Church in Bristol, PA on Thursday, July 30 at 11:00 am. Visitation will be held from 9:30-11:00 in St. Mark Church. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages those who wish to honor his memory to donate to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
